What Exactly is in Luvme Nappies?

January 25, 2024

Luvme has always aimed to be a transparent brand that you can trust. We’re proud of the fact that we do our best to source the best eco ingredients around to create nappies that are both kind to the Earth and also top performing!

A little while ago, we did a journal about what exactly is in our bamboo and plant wipes. We thought it was time to do a deep dive into what is in our Luvme nappies! Happy reading!

FSC-Certified Wood Pulp:

Ingredient: Our nappies are made from responsibly sourced wood pulp certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification ensures that the wood pulp comes from responsibly managed forests, promoting biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, and supporting local communities. This commitment aligns with sustainable and ethical forestry practices.

Japanese SAP (Super Absorbent Polymer):

Ingredient: Sandia & Sumitomo Super absorbent polymer.

Super absorbent polymers are designed to enhance the absorbency of the nappy. The specific choice of Sandia & Sumitomo suggests a focus on high-quality and performance. It's crucial to ensure that the polymer is sourced responsibly or, if possible, derived from renewable resources for a more eco-friendly profile. This SAP sets our nappies apart from others—it’s so absorbent and is the best of the best when it comes to SAP.

Tissue Paper (Core Wrap Component - Top and Bottom):

Ingredient: Biodegradable tissue paper.

Tissue paper is chosen for its biodegradability, meaning it breaks down naturally over time, reducing environmental impact. This material is often used in the core wrap to maintain the integrity of the nappy while aligning with sustainability goals.

PP (Polypropylene) & Non-Woven (Top Sheet, Grip Tab Joint, Grip Tab Sticker, Water Resistant Sheet, Breathable Back Sheet):

Ingredients: Polypropylene and non-woven materials.

Polypropylene is a versatile and recyclable plastic. Non-woven materials offer breathability and can be made from various fibres. The combination suggests a focus on comfort, durability, and eco-friendly design. These elements are needed to makes sure that our nappies are leak proof and last for up 12 hours overnight!

PP (Polypropylene) & PE (Polyethylene) (Frontal Tab):

Ingredients: Polypropylene and polyethylene plastics.

Polypropylene and polyethylene are commonly used in various plastic products. These materials are recyclable, emphasising the importance of responsible disposal and recycling practices to minimise their impact on the environment. The plastic in these tabs are unavoidable and create a secure and safe nappy.

PP (Polypropylene) & PLA (Polylactic Acid) (Leak Guard):

Ingredients: Polypropylene and PLA (derived from corn starch or sugarcane).

Polypropylene provides strength, while PLA is a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources. This combination aims to balance performance with environmental considerations, offering a more sustainable option for the leak guard. Our nappies are super absorbent and can hold 900mls of liquid without leaking!

Non-Woven (Waistband Material):

Ingredient: Non-woven material.

Non-woven materials are often chosen for their softness, breathability, and eco-friendly characteristics. They are made without traditional weaving, reducing resource consumption. The non woven waistband is super high and keeps leaks in.

Lycra (Spandex) (Rubber bands):

Ingredient: Lycra (Spandex).

Lycra is a synthetic elastic material known for its stretch and recovery properties. While it provides a comfortable fit, its environmental impact depends on recycling efforts and proper disposal. This ensures that our nappies are stretchy and comfy for your little one to move easily.

Bamboo Back Sheet (Pandas nappies)

Ingredient: 100% Bamboo

Using bamboo fibres is an earth conscious option; bamboo is a sustainable, easily regenerated plant. It is naturally moisture wicking and is 3x more absorbent than cotton. The bamboo back sheet that Luvme uses is 100% biodegradable and compostable.

You’ll notice that our nappies are eco conscious, but we wanted to point out that we use a minimal amount of plastic to ensure that Luvme nappies are functional and top performing. Luvme nappies wouldn’t be helpful if they leaked or didn’t perform well, so a careful balance of function and earth sustainability is necessary. We have worked hard to provide a nappy that is kind to the Earth without sacrificing on quality and practicality.

Luvme is always working towards even more earth-responsible options!

Postpartum is a wild time… you’re in a baby bubble, flooded with so much oxytocin yet you’ve never been so exhausted. You are getting to know this tiny human that you brought into the world but you’re still discovering who you are as a mother. You have a deep sense of love that came so naturally but you also feel like maybe you don’t really know what you’re doing. So many beautiful paradoxes make up that post birth period.
