3 Easy Ways to Reduce your Child's Toxic Load

June 06, 2023

1. DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash

In a perfect world, we would all eat organic produce exclusively but with the cost of living skyrocketing, it can get a bit tricky! It’s a bit shocking how many pesticides cover fruit and veggies, but here’s a super simple way to reduce those pesky pesticides!

DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash

Put your fruit and veg in a clean sink or large bowl.

Add 2 cups of filtered water (Double the recipe if you need to so that the water covers the fruit and vegetables.)

Stir in 1 teaspoon of bicarb soda.

Allow veggies and fruit to soak for 1-2 hours.

Rinse fruit and veggies with clean, filtered water.

It’s simple but it works! One study showed that soaking apples in a baking soda solution following a 24-hour exposure to certain pesticides completely removed all surface residues in 12-15 minutes. It goes without saying that we still recommend buying organic if possible but this is a helpful option!

2. Run An Epsom Salt Detox Bath

Our children’s bodies are like little sponges and soak up all the toxins around them. One great way to do a toxin detox is an Epsom salt bath.

Epsom salts are made of magnesium and help replenish magnesium levels. Magnesium is very important for our detoxification pathways, and they also have been shown to pull a variety of toxins from the body. Another perk is that magnesium promotes restful sleep!

Just add these two ingredients to a warm bath and soak for at least 15 minutes.

1/2 -1.5 cups of Epsom salts
1/2 - 1 cup of bicarb soda

Use the lesser measurements for younger children. Not recommended for babies under 6 months.

3. Swap to chemical free baby products.

Children have thinner, more permeable skin so they are more susceptible to toxins entering their bodies and blood stream. This makes the choices of what we put on our children’s skin super important! It’s just about finding the right swaps that are a lower tox option.

Nappies and wipes: Nappies and wipes are one of the worst culprits and are packed with harmful chemicals. These chemicals cause rashes on super sensitive skin. Our eco nappies and wipes have no nasties! Before they are toilet trained, your little one will spend almost every hour of everyday wearing a nappy, and the last thing you want is for them to be soaking in chemicals! With this swap, you can rest assured that your precious babe is not taking in toxins when they wear a nappy. Browse our range of non-toxic eco nappies here.

Even “natural” baby wipes are often full of fragrances, which are chemicals. Our Luvme wipes are fragrance free and all-natural! Get them here.

Luvme Eco is truly a close-knit, family-owned business and today, it’s our birthday! Woo hoo! Luvme began nearly 14 years ago when Kendall and her mum, Laurie, were confronted with the fact that every year 1.5 billion disposable nappies end up in landfill in Australia every year! They knew they had to find a solution that was kinder to the Earth, for future generations. The first eco nappy was born not long after and the rest is history!
