Simple Nature Play Activity

May 18, 2023

Being an eco-friendly brand, nature is one of our greatest loves! Being outside and feeling the sun on your face is scientifically proven to boost dopamine levels and improve brain development. Our kids need to be outdoors and experience all the benefits that our beautiful world has to offer. Here’s a super simple and fun idea to do with your little ones to do just that!

I do this regularly with my little girl who is three, so it is kid-tested and kid-approved—she loves it!

It requires no extra supplies which is a win (kids crafts that need 37 different supplies are so annoying, am I riiiigghht?) It is easily adaptable for every age and fun to do with infants up to primary school.

Step 1

Get outside into that glorious sunshine and go on a nature walk! Bring a basket and collect flowers and leaves along the way. Have little conversations along the way, encouraging your little one to take in their surroundings through all five senses (maybe not taste though haha!)

Step 2

Bring your nature treasures home and now it’s time to get creative! Fill a bowl, plate, or container with water and add in your flowers and leaves.

My little girl and I wanted to create an ice suncatcher, so we chose a shallow bowl and used a medicine dropper to create the hole to hang the suncatcher.

Step 3

Allow your ice creation to freeze in the freezer for at least 3 hours.

Step 4

Take your ice creation out of the freezer. To make the suncatcher, add a bit of twine to make a loop. Hang in a tree, watch it melt, and wonder at its beauty!

If you have made ice disks, let your baby explore the feeling and the colours and textures.

Once you have completed this activity, you have exercised by going for a walk, enjoyed nature, and soaked in some vitamin D, and spent quality time with your little one. It’s amazing—I mean we are biased but with so many benefits in one activity, how could you not be!
